Frenectomy (Tongue Tie Treatment)
At Palm Beach Periodontics, your oral health is a priority. Our expert team is dedicated to giving you the treatment you need and deserve. A frenectomy is a type of oral surgery that can help treat a lip-tie, a tongue-tie, or prevent recession and gaps in the teeth.
The frenum is a band of connective tissue that attaches the lips or cheeks to your gums or your tongue to the floor of your mouth. A frenectomy is simple procedure performed by our periodontists where the frenum is removed or modified.
When Is A Frenectomy Needed?
Sometimes, the frenum is too short or too tight in patients, and this can cause oral health and speech issues. In infants, this can cause issues with breastfeeding and swallowing. In older children and adults, this can cause problems with speech, gum recession, and gaps in the teeth. Our team will examine you thoroughly to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
Types of Frenectomies
There are two main types of frenectomies that we treat:
- Lingual frenectomy: the band of tissue that connects the underside of your tongue to the floor of your mouth is removed. In other words, this procedure is used to treat tongue ties.
- Labial frenectomy: this procedure is performed to remove a band of connective tissue that attaches from your lips or cheeks to your gums. Labial frenectomies are often performed in situations where the frenum is leading to recession or gaps in the teeth.
The Procedure
This is a very quick and simple procedure performed by our periodontists. The patient will be numbed with local anesthesia and the frenum will be treated either with a small incision or laser. The procedure rarely takes more than 30 minutes.
